WTN: Chambers Ganevat Tasting

by John Hartnett » Wed Feb 23, 2011 8:46 pm

On Friday 2/18, CSW put together a last minute tasting of Jean-Francois Ganevat's wines from his organic estate in the Jura. The tasting was two whites and two reds. I tasted the two whites:

Ganevat 2008 Cotes du Jura Savagnin Ouille Chalasses Marn - topped-up wine that doesn't have the oxidative and nutty elements of the region's traditional white wines, apple on the nose, nice mouthfeel, well balanced with good acidity, very nice wine ($49.99)

Ganevat 2005 Cotes du Jura Savagnin Cuvee Prestige - traditional Jura white with oxidative and nutty elements, very bracing and intense wine, difficult to appreciate its full potential without experiencing it throughout an evening with food ($56.99)

Surprised you missed the reds. I've heard a lot of praise for Ganevat's reds - have a couple of bottles of the '09 Pinot due from Crush that I'm really looking forward to.

Salil,
I should have explained that I arrived at CSW a few minutes before the official start of the tasting. Sophi was pouring one of the reds into a decanter and I was running out the door for a rendezvous with friends. I'm sure I missed out, as I've heard the same as you about Ganevat's reds. Bottom line...not a judgment on the quality of their red wine.

Hi John -

Thank you for the very interesting notes. I have read some high praise for Ganevat's wines recently, but have not had a chance to try any yet.
