SFChron: CanaryIsland Wines

Rather interesting article in today's SFChron by DerrickSchneider on the CanaryIsland wines. Don't recall that I've had any, but maybe worth scouting out.

He indicates that the ListanNegro grape from there was the one brought to Calif and eventually became known as the Mission grape. Not never heard that there connection before.
The vines on the CanaryIslands are all own-rooted. We have been assured by many authorities that pre-phylloxera wines are far superior to those from grafted vines. Guess we can now put that claim to the test.

I picked up a wine from the Canary Islands, Fronton de Oro 2008 Gran Canaria Malpais ($21.49), at CSW last week. The wine is a blend of Listan Negro, Negramoll and Preto. I plan on pairing this wine with a steak; I'll post notes afterwards. The Spanish buyer at CSW, Chris, has brought in a couple of other Canary Island wines and is a big fan of these wines.
