2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Alberdi Selección Especial (Spain, La Rioja, Rioja)
Dusty, herbal, leathery and a bit astingent. There's some tart fruit at the mid-palate, but this is mostly about tertiaty character now. Still shows some wood elements as well.

David, I can't tell whether you think this is over the hill, or whether there was never a hill to begin with.
I have a couple but haven't tasted it ---guess it's time---but wouldn't have thought it was overaged.
Have you had other bottles?

Charles,

I have been having serious issues with my sense of smell due to a rappelling accident last fall. My notes are mostly worthless right now, but I keep working at it as part of a hope therapy (my theory goes keep buying, drinking and writing about wine & it will come back - if I stop it won't). Actually some time mid-today I had a bit of a breakthrough, and instead of being at 5% power I am probably at 15% (improvement comes in spurts...when it comes at all). The second half of the bottle is much better, with more mid-palate fruit. I don't think this wine is anywhere near dead yet!
