WTN: '03 Cedarville Cabernet

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:27 am

A very trusted friend described Cedarville's 2006 cab as his WOTN at a party last night and that inspired me to rummage around in the basement until I came up with this one. This probably ran somewhere around $28 or $30 on release.

Very dark - almost black in the glass. Despite my cold, I get an effusive nose of dark fruit with a bit of a spicy character. In the mouth, this is a pretty plush wine, but still well balanced. There's a heaviness to it with just a touch of dried fruit character but layers of other flavors to go with that, including some brighter fruit notes and a little anise-spice. There's plenty of acidity to keep it from being ponderous and tannins that are soft but still very present. It finishes dry and clean, with those soft tannins hanging in.

Really nice stuff. It's big without being at all goopy and tastes like it has plenty of life left in it. Closer to Napa than Bordeaux, but different from either, and reflective of the way the grapes grow in Fairplay. Yummy.

Thanx for the note. I have had every vintage since 2001, except for the 2003 which I don't have. Cedarville is one of my favorite wineries in CA, one a buy from every year.

Unlike James, I only have the last vintage of Cab from Cedarville (although I have several of his Zins and Syrahs). Promising to read how the '05 has developed. Thanks Mike.
