? How to pronounce Brane Cantenac?

by OW Holmes » Mon Oct 02, 2006 5:41 pm

I am guessing the e in Brane is silent, and that the emphasis is on the last sylable of Cantenac, but that's as far as my guesses go. Any help? A bottle was donated to our Thursday after work at the office tasting.

I've always said Bron Con-ten-KNOCK. But my french is pretty Cave-man.

Ughh. Og agree with Bill. Final E silent, but it keeps the n in Brane from being nasalized. C on the end is not silent. "Bron Con-teh-nahk" comes close, I think.

Thank you all. I will now sound knowledgeable - or at least not as stupid - Thursday night.

I do my best to avoid such issues.

I'd pronounce it, "This stuff is pretty good!"

If you take the above pronunciation "Bron Con-ten-KNOCK" and change the "o" to and "ah" sound, you're pretty close.

Brahn-Cahn-tuh-nahk.

Best regards,
Alex R.

It's already there, Alex. In American English, most readers would surely render "bron" as "brahn," to rhyme with "Ron," "Don" and "upon," not "brohn."

Fine Robin.
I thought the idea was to pronounce it in French rather than American.

Best regards,
Alex
