Feteasca Neagra (which means "black maiden") is an indigenous Romanian vinifera variety. I love trying Central and Eastern European wines made from traditional, non-internationalized grapes. This wine is always a class act, and it costs under ten bucks!
13% alc./vol. Translucent; medium scarlet-ruby colour. Plenty of spice on the nose, with forward berry and tart cherry aromas supporting the spice - pure elegance. Dry and grippy right on the entry, with balanced acidity and very firm grippy tannins. Dry again on the mid-palate, with dusty cherry flavours and plenty of structure. Medium-bodied, with a firm backbone. Clean and appetizing on the finish, with a warm and cleansing exit.
This is truly an elegant gem that reminds me of many a St-Émilion costing at least twice if not three times as much. Kudos to the producer for making such a decent and enjoyable wine at a price point that has seen lamentable "modernization" for a number of years now.
If you can get this wherever you are, give it a try...
