Atlanta restaurants?

by SteveEdmunds » Sat Feb 12, 2011 4:59 pm

I'll be visiting my daughter and family this next weekend, and want to take them out for a nice supper? Is there a good place there with interesting wines?

HI Steve!

I can't offer any reco's but, a while back Jenise asked the same question and received many hits on that thread. I'm sorry but I could not find that thread for you, perhaps someone can. However, on the lowdown, no wine kind of place my son and husband recommend "Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles Restaurant" on Peachtree. Perhaps aftet a "knight" on the town?
Wish I could be of more help.

Enjoy your trip!

My relatives are north of Allanta, so not familiar with Decatur (though I was born there!). But I've always heard good things about the "nouveau Southern" place owned by one of the Indigo Girls, either the Watershed or the Woodshed. Scott Peacock (who worked and cared for Edna Lewis) was chef there, though I think he is now gone.

Steve, years ago I used to fly to Atlanta strictly to dine, and sometimes drive a vintage car back, if I found a really cool one, that had never seen salt. I was impressed by several quaint and lovely French bistros scattered around town. I could not understand why they were there, in a southern city like Atlanta, since I had not seen a similar cluster in any other southern city. So you can hop on Goggle or Zagat and look.

Don't know if the phenemenon still exists, unfortunately. I was there recently for a convention and anticipated for days finding a little French bistro for my last night. As I was exiting the convention center and feeling as free Hunter Thompson leaning his BSA onto Highway 1 toward Pacifica for a midnight run, an Indian colleague chased after me asking if he could join me for dinner. Feeling a devastating letdown, I asked, knowing full well the answer, since the guy doesn't drink, "Would you consider a French restaurant?" "No, no, no, not French! Vegetables only!" Today I would leave him in the dust. That was my last episode of giving up time left on earth for no good reason. Good luck!

Here's a link, with ratings, of all Atlanta restaurants.

I don't think so. This is the place I meant:

Supposed to have a pretty good list from my memory. For years the chef was Scott Peacock, who ended up being the caretaker for Edna Lewis in her last years (there was some strife with her family). So the idea is (I assume still) classic Southern cooking with good ingredients.

I spent 6 months in Atlanta for business back in 2003 and my favorite restaurant was South City Kitchen - best fried chicken in the south!!

Sadly, this was before I really started exploring wine. However, their wine list looks decent (a few from Santa Barbara County that I visited in the fall).

I also went to the Float Away cafe once and it was real good also (interesting location at the back of a darkened industrial park). The wine list seems a bit limited:

I have real fond memories of Atlanta (except traffic) - I would enjoy a repeat assignment!

Haven't been there yet but would like to try Woodfire Grill. The chef, Kevin Gillespie, was either winner or runner-up on a top chef competition on television. I wasn't able to pull up the restaurant website today for some reason but you might be able to check out the menu and wine list before going.

I was going to suggestn this, too, JC. Kevin was a runner up in season 6 but he turned out to be the fan favorite in post-award voting, if I recall.

The guy's brilliant. If his wine list is good, Steve couldn't go wrong there.
