Lunch notes:

2006 Scholium Project Farina Vineyards “The Prince in his Caves” – a small production sauvignon blanc that didn’t seem at all like that varietal at first. It had a little initial sulphur, quickly segueing to sweet tropical fruit, and it got more interesting as it warmed, gaining an almost Riesling aromatic profile and filling out on palate. Tasty.

2000 Tyrells Vat 47 Hunter Valley Chardonnay – another wine with tropical fruit nose (mango?) and flavours, darker in colour and with full flavors. Pleasant.

2002 Le Logis de la Bouchardiere Chinon Le Clos – good colour, slightly warm nose with a hint of mint developing and some tobacco and mineral. Medium bodied, mellow and drinking well now. I got none of the green hints of cab franc in this wine so it was a tough one to place.

1985 William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Silver Label (Napa) - a bottle out of my cellar from the early years of this winemaker’s production (I understand he sold out to big business and while the winery goes on, it is now without his input). Very decent nose with some spicy oak, but now getting a bit acidic and lacking in fruit in midpalate. Decent length. Would have been better some years ago, but still quite drinkable.

2000 Malvira Roero Mombeltrano - a Nebbiolo wine from Roero, better known for the whites (Arneis). Dark wine, big nose, slightly sweet, slightly browning edges, good fruit, smooth in the mouth and medium long. Better than the 1999 we tasted awhile ago.

2000 Livon Tiare Mate Merlot – another interesting one from DOC Collio. I got a whiff of seaweed or iodine at first and oak after. Full bodied wine with lots of soft tannin and the only clue to grape, a fair bit of cocoa.

2001 Fattoria Barbi Brunello – dark wine, good fruit in the nose and a high perfumed note as well, good fruit on palate and clean acidity, I expect this will last for many years.

2003 Ch. Pontet Canet – big plumy nose, not too ripe, soft tannins and good acidity with a long balanced finish. Very good wine with many years ahead. Avoids being over the top new age in style.

Ch. d’Orignac Pineau des Charentes – odd amber colour with a pink tinge. I’d have sworn this was a white wine based version, but the back label spoke of red. Quite sweet (made by adding brandy to grape must) ending with peach flavours. I thought some rose petal crept into the nose a bit later. Not a wine as it isn’t a fermented product, but no one complained!

1990 Quady Starboard Franks Vineyard – warm nose and notes of fig and nuts, ripe and smooth in the mouth, this could have been mistaken for Port (I think he had switched to Port varietals by then).

2006 Scholium Project Farina Vineyards “The Prince in his Caves” – My wine. Grassy nose that I only belatedly identified as grassy--at first, it was more cactusy with passion fruit, honey and a bit of coconut on the nose that did not prepare one for the peachy, bone dry palate. Fascinating wine--thanks to David Bueker, Oswaldo and everyone else who talked up these idiosyncratic wines enough to make me understand that my life would not be complete without at least one Scholium experience. To put that in perspective, I'll note that I paid about $50 for this bottle and thought the wine well worth it.

2000 Tyrells Vat 47 Hunter Valley Chardonnay – this has a very interesting and beguiling scent on the nose that I couldn't relate to any fruit I know except to say that it was both exotic and seductive. Excellent, though I would not hold longer.

2002 Le Logis de la Bouchardiere Chinon Le Clos – Bill, I'm with you, did not recognize this as cab franc. Initial nose of powdered cherry fruit and tobacco laced with a hormonal blast of vitamin B on the palate did not ring familiar. Adequate acids, resolved tannins. No previous acquaintaince with this producer, but the wine was quite good. Would drink up any remaining bottles soon though.

1985 William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon Silver Label (Napa) - Can't improve on your assessment, Bill.

2000 Malvira Roero Mombeltrano - Delicious, and it certainly rang Italian but nebbiolo was about the last grape I suspected.

2000 Livon Tiare Mate Merlot – My notes say: "open, generous sweetness, possible mild oak, Bordeauxish. Right bank Merlot?" but my verbalization must have been faint as it's owner never heard me and the questioning went on. Very interesting wine.

2001 Fattoria Barbi Brunello – What you said.

2003 Ch. Pontet Canet – Plums, black cherry and cigar box, classicly Paulliac. I get that part, Coop goes in for the kill guessing Pontet Canet. A rare example, in my experience, of a 2003 that doesn't taste Californian. Excellent.

Ch. d’Orignac Pineau des Charentes – I loved this thing. Smokey pink color. Lychee syrup nose, watermelon palate with a hint of dried nectarine tang, and fantastic (how wierd is this) following the grapefruit segments on my fruit plate. I rarely finish the dessert wines but I didn't leave a drop of this behind.

1990 Quady Starboard Franks Vineyard – Hmmm...I definitely mistook it for port. It was certainly tighter and more en pointe than the Starboard Jimmy brought last month which was very easily identifiable as new world/simple/Californian. Very good.

Jenise et al:

The Naucratis (a Verdelho from Clarksburg) offers a Scholium Experience at $20. High alcohol (15%!!!) which for some reason does not show at all! Delicious peachy fruti with plenty of acidity yet smoothness as well. I liked it quite a bit.

BRIAN!!!!

Welcome back!!!

Did you wake up from the coma? Was your sentence reduced? Did the girl's father decide not to press charges after all? Hmmm? :)

You were definitely missed and your absence much remarked upon.

Thanks for the tip on the Naucratis.

Thanks, Janice.

I decided I was tired of paying Comcast $139 per month for cable and internet (plus...I was addicted to surfing and probably needed to take a break at home) ....and my computer appears to be dying...and participating in a forum is challenging on a smart phone screen...and I couldn't remember my password anyway...

and...

at the office (the other option) my participation was stopped cold by our firewall suddenly deciding to block all alcohol and tobacco sites.

This morning...it stopped. '

I missed you all!
