WTN: Disappointing 2001 Hexamer Spatlese

2001 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese
Even in my less than optimum state this was less than satisfying. While it still shows relatively young, it has become rather disjointed, with acids poking out and a bitter fruit skin element on the finish. Laura concurred with my assessment, so it wasn't just an artifact of my twisted palate. This is the third or fourth consecutive time that I have been less than favorably disposed towards a 2001 Hexamer, which is especially disappointing given the numerous remaining bottles I have of the kabinett, spatlese and auslese.

At least they were (dirt) cheap.

That's really disappointing, a real shame. Hopefully some of your other bottles will show better.

Appreciate the warning though, especially as I had been eyeing some of the same wine at HDH recently (hadn't bought yet, quite glad about that right now).

Yes, I'd been eyeing the same wine on HDH. Too bad.

If it's any consolation, I had the 2001 Hexamer Auslese Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg over the holidays and it was really, really lovely. It was on the sweet-n-light endof things, but it was so aromatic and elegant, with this insane and highly distinctive essence of cantaloupe which I loved. Something like a 92-pointer.

Interesting comment on the auslese. Salil and I had that wine maybe a year or two ago, and it was not all that interesting. Perhaps time has been kind to it.

The bottle I sourced of the Auslese had been in passive storage its whole life and seem quite advantaged for 2001 Auslese (especially in color), so it probably showed "mature" which I am a sucker for.

Not to be too esoteric, but I note that David Schildknecht had reviewed 2 different AP #s (8 and13) of the Auslese in Tanzer. Mine, which I've not yet tasted, has A.P. #20. I note in CT that David and Salil have tasted one, but it's possible that these are different wine.
