Biodynamic Coffee

by Brian Gilp » Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:27 pm

I recently read about a brazilian coffee plantation that has gone biodynamic. I am taking this as a signal that the influence of biodynamics is growing even if it only marketing influence. I read about it in a newsletter put out by the owner of my source for green coffee beans and he stated that he expects the coffee to be expensive and sell out quickly. Believe that says it all.

I for one would be interested in trying a biodynamically grown coffee, just as I am generally in favor of its practices in the vineyard, and tend to favorably view wines that are made from biodynamic grapes. (I tend to buy organically grown coffee when available). I don't know enough about the spiritual/astrological practices involved, but it is clear that those dedicated to it as a way of growing are consciously connected in an appealing way to their vineyards and the larger environment. Like any other practice it is subject to manipulation for monetary sake, but I think that is why certifying agencies are useful. Jim

I took some bags of it on a trip to the Loire last november and distributed to biodynamic vignerons. Virginie Joly said it was delicious. But I haven't tried it yet.

Why does the concept of "biodynamic coffee" bring a friendly but somewhat skeptical smile to my eyes?
