Parker and 1977 vintage port

by Jon Peterson » Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:47 pm

I just printed out Parker's vintage guide covering 1970 to 2009. There are several years missing, one of which is 1977 (a wonderful year, I've read, for port). Does anyone know why are there columns missing from this chart?

There are no "official" 1977 Vintage Port reviews in the eRP database (just some taken from one of his later buying guides), so likely the reason is that Bob never tasted the '77s as part of an official report.

I don't know but that won't stop me from responding. I thought that many of the vintages were removed when they were deemed to no longer be of interest. I would speculate that 1984 would also be missing as a fairly disapointing vintage and one for which Mr. Parker probably fees is dead now.

I think its misleading to suggest that '77 is a port vintage of little interest today. Some considered it to be one of a handful of "vintages of the century" but now I doubt many would say that. That said, its still a great vintage which was widely declared. I think David B. has the answer.

Thanks for responding David, Brian and Tom. I recently gave a '77 port to a friend which lead to me asking the question.
