WTN: Huff Merlot-Cabernet 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Feb 11, 2011 11:22 am

South Bay Vineyards
Huff Estates
Price Edward County (Ontario)

A blend of Merlot (70 per cent) and 15 per cent each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc

Cherry red in the glass.

Smoky, earthy, rich, cherry fruit on the nose.

Light to medium weight, cherry, cranberry, cedar, tangy acidity, floral, spicy, red licorice, heavily charred.

With time, turns quite tart, with cranberry dominating and some bitterness.

Earthy, tart, mouthwatering on the finish.

This was quite a disappointing wine, as it bore little resemblence to the same wine I tried at the winery in September of 2010, lacking the weight, smoothness and richness that drew me to it. I do grow tired of the old bait and switch: wines that taste great at the winery, in a restaurant or on vacationm, but then don't carry through when you try to replicate the experience at home. :(

Purchased at $29.95 (Canadian).
