1970 Taylor from AIW, bottled in 1965? Paging JBL...

Last night my father-in-law opened an interesting bottle of wine that he'd been saving for a while, a 1970 Taylor vintage port. However, look at the label:

Obviously it's impossible for a 1970 porto to be bottled in 1965, but I thought that was an unusually obvious typo. The cork was branded bottled in 1972, which is what I'd expect.

The wine? Subjected to indifferent storage, it was not browning in the least, and was delicious, but not an epiphany.

Walt, that is not the traditional label is it?!! Wonder if shipped in cask and bottled by importer in the USA? ...like the old days back home!

Walt, here's another label indicating that this 1970 was bottled this time in 1968: http://www.bar-do-binho.com/images/taylor/taylor/70.jpg

This one is bottled in 1972: http://images.winecommune.com/lotImage/805702507.jpg

Strange.

Bob [and other Bob],

What a nightmare this must be for auction houses and purchasers trying to authenticate older bottles of port. I don't know what the "correct" label is, as I've now seen three different ones. Extremely confusing.

Vintage Port used to be bottled with an identifying stamp in the wax capsule as to vintage and producer, and was often left unlabelled. The wine couldn't be imported without a label, though, so one would be printed up, like this one.

Of course it would have been bottled in '72.
