1995 Ducru-Beaucaillou

I rarely get to taste Bordeaux with some maturity, but this was a bottle shared at my table at the Open That Bottle Night at St. Jacques Restaurant in Raleigh. Don and Jessica, sitting to my right, brought this wine along with a younger Bordeaux. It had some nice secondary or tertiary mature odors and tastes with a tolerable amount of funk or barnyard. I was grateful to have a bit of it, especially when you consider the price it brings nowadays. This Chateau is considered a leading super second growth and is in the Saint Julien region.

JC, nice of these folks to bring that but just as nice is that the people they shared this with knew to appreciate it!

I mentioned to Don, the one that brought this wine, that I was picking up some previously ordered wine at The Wine Merchant, Raleigh, the next day. He said he started working at The Wine Merchant while attending North Carolina State University and that is how he got interested in wine.

Ducru is a wonderful wine. The 1995 is fantastic, although still a little on the young side I think. It was my WOTN last year at our 1995 Bordeaux offline, beating out the likes of Leoville Las Cases and Angelus.

Matt, did you note a little funk on the nose? I was surprised that this was only mentioned by one poster on CellarTrack notes for this vintage.

Not really. Funk isn't something I'd really associate with Ducru personally.
