WTN: A rare occurence of a Napa wine in Fin: William Hill

William Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - Napa Valley; 14,5% abv; 25,50€
This was by no means an elegant wine, and I will say it out right that I didn't really like this now. Yet this was a welcome change to the few other Americans we have seen here. The scent is very ripe, full of very dark fruit, but instead of being harsh and woody (this sees "only" 38% new wood) this is full of sweet aromas and some cigar box savoriness. Very full bodied, very sweet fruit, but unlike previous Cabs we have seen, this does have enough tannin and acidity to keep it all together. In other words, there is a perverse kind of balance in this wine: there is for my tastes too much wood, too much fruit, plenty of tannin and high acidity, yet all these elements are harmonious in relation to each other. Despite its size, it is rather refreshing so there is some moreishness to it. I would be intrigued to try this in five years or so if the elements I don't like would have faded by then. I can imagine that this is a pretty decent, fairly priced (by Finnish standards) Napa Cab for those who like such a big style. But for now at least, this isn't one for me.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Hmmm...I thought William Hill Winery was gone. I wonder if I misunderstood and it was just a label change (the label you show--thank you for that--is definitely different than what I recall) but you certainly reacted to this wine as you would have to the William Hills I remember. Another possibility is that I understood right and the label got sold off to someone desiring the appearance of old guard original Napa-ness for what is otherwise an upstart, bulk or negotiant-style operation. That's happening a lot these days. Lou? Hoke?

Yuh,"William Hill Winery" got sold and Bill Hill left to go develop some other stuff. He's better at starting things than running things, I think. So the new William Hill has the name but no William Hill.

Yeah, Hoke and Tom have got it pretty much right. Actually I live on the east edge of Silverado CC and the William Hill winery is on the west side. Hoke has been here many times, for Tom due east from Hardman (Luna winery) and a little north is William Hill winery. I've never been a really big fan of the wines made there. Good, nothing special IMHO.

Ditto. In fact, they were surrounded by wineries who outperformed them--made you wonder why they couldn't do better.
