What's The Most Surprising Wine You've Had Recently

Sometimes a wine just really surprises you! While digging around in the back of my passive wine cellar in the basement a few weeks ago I came across several bottles of long forgotten 1983 Chateau Larose -Trintaudon. I went to Cellar Tracker and found one note from 1995 which said "Completely mature. Ok wine. Just above average but not special." with a 79 rating. I stood the bottle up and forgot about it until last night when I popped it to have with a grilled flank steak. I wasn't expecting it to be palatable and had the back up bottle at the ready.

Much to my and the wife's surprise, this was a really enjoyable bottle! Came across as what I generally think of as a typical Medoc type nose and flavor. Kind of earthy with nice balance and little very subtle hints of fruitiness & floweriness. Real nice compliment to the steak. Think I'll let the next one breath for an hour and see if it's even better. :)

I just had a wine from a winery called Lambouri from Cypress, called Commmandaria Legacy. The current vintage is 2000 and is made from the indigenous Mavro and Xinisteri grapes.

The color is intense caramel, almost like a PX, while on the palate it is deep, sweet and lush, ripe, Perhaps slightly simple but incredible length....goes on for minutes!

AT dinner on Saturday night we were served a fortified wine - masked. All we were asked was vintage.

The guesses were 2000, 1995, 1985, 1970s. One said 1945.

The wine was a 1909 Rivesaltes, maker Laurent Viguer. This has been in barrel for 100 years, Bottled in 2009. Lovely spicy, raisined madierised drop. Not overly complexy for its age but amazing for its freshness and life.

cheers

Andrew
