WTN: Wines with Moroccan lamb

by Shaji M » Sun Jan 23, 2011 11:29 am

Had some friends over last evening. We had Moroccan lamb over cous cous as the main course. Over the course of a great evening we had
2005 Franciscan Cabernet Sauvignon- perfumey nose, cassis, cedar, pencil, wel balanced wine, pleasure to drink right now.
2003 Vino Noceto OGD (Original Grandpere Vineyard) Zinfandel- An Amador county Zin which has mellowed beautifully, red berries, cocoa, soft tannins. Another beauty.
2008 Starr Ranch Rousanne- from Paso Robles, tropical fruits (papaya, guava) going on here with a spritz of lemon. Nice acidity with an underlying note of spring water. 3 for 3.
2004 Sobon Estate ReZerve Orange Muscat- Another Amador County wine. Clear bright golden in color, orange blossoms, vanilla, toast, mangoes. Went well with Greek kourabiedes and melomakaronas.
Good friends. Good wines. All is well.

Vino Noceto is definitely one of Amador's best little secrets, and I'm surprised that over the years they haven't become better known and appreciated. How'd you come by them? Thanks for the notes.

Jenise,
Vino Noceto is indeed one of Amador counties little kept secrets. They also make some really good Sangiovese and they have built their reputation around them. And they have a decent grappa too. They are down the road from Domaine Terre Rouge (another of my favorite wineries anywhere). I picked up most of these wines from a trip almost 7 years ago. Considering that I am a mere 3 hours from Amador county, I havent been there since and all the Amador county wines I have been posting on since have been from that trip! As my supplies are now dwindling, another visit may be soon forthcoming.
