WTN: 2003 Gouges Porrets

2003 Gouges NSG Clos des Porrets

I'm not sure why I bought two bottles of this wine. Something about liking Gouges and finding a good price. Plus the curiosity of what 2003 would bring. I had a bottle back in September and then a bottle again last night, and they were pretty similar. I suppose if I had the patience/space I could have satisfied more of my curiosity by aging them for many more years/decades. But there are more reliable ways to use my limited space.

Anyway, the wine itself is about what you'd expect. The color is really dark, enough to make my eyes jump when pouring it from the bottle. It shows pretty well on opening because there is evidence of the dark firm Gouges NSG iron that I like and of course there is sweet fruit, but not too much. With air, the tannins slowly emerge and the body thins/loosens out a bit, so not exactly an ideal combination. But there is still enough tension from minerally sinews to go well with food and it was a pleasurable-enough experience.

For someone like myself who is a Gouges fan, it might be interesting to see how this ages. But as I said, I just can't justify the limited storage space. You may be different.

I adore the Gouges Porrets alot, too. It's a decent value, too, the way it's priced locally.

Sure. And it's certainly cheaper than his Pruliers, Vaucrains, or LSG.

But it seems like not too long ago it was in the $30s whereas 2005 and afterwards are all over $60 (at least initially). Not sure I like it enough to buy it over $60, but of course keen eyes can do well on closeouts. The story of Burgundy for mere mortals I suppose.

Could just be me, but I would buy Chevillon over Gouges any day of the week and twice on Sunday. IMHO a better all around producer. :D I wouldn't throw the Gouges out of my glass.

You're certainly allowed to spend your money however you see fit!

I like both producers and although I don't have a ton of experience, the thing I like about Gouges is the stronger expression of a hard and serious yet mysteriously seductive personality. Chevillon's wines seem a bit 'milder' to me, although that probably means they are less marked by the winemaker and more evocative of the terroirs. Either way, I need to drink more of both.

I'd gve the edge to Chevillon, but like both, and more likely to find Gouges at closeout pricing,.
