NEWS: Dee Vine Wines (SF) to move?

by wnissen » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:23 pm

For those with a love of riesling in the San Francisco Bay Area, Larry Ellison's America's Cup yacht team is paying the city US$55 million for space on the Embarcadero piers, which will involve "most of the land between Piers 19 and 29."

Those who have visited Dee Vine Wines at Pier 19 have seen that it's essentially warehouse space, and not even especially nice warehouse space, with significant seismic problems. Rationally I know it makes no sense to have some of the most scenic, highly touristed land in the country filled with warehouses, and I cheer the development of the Ferry Building, as well as the Exploratorium (perhaps the best science museum in the world, currently under development on Piers 15 and 17). So why is my heart sunk in my chest? I still remember the first tasting I attended, in 2003, and really enjoy the stroll up the Embarcadero to the tastings. Hopefully the folks at Dee Vine will find some good space somewhere else; nothing stays the same forever.

If it's true, I hope the new location provides better storage than open boxes and bottles stored right on the dock.

You know, Salil, that may just be the silver lining. Obviously the waterfront temperature is cool almost all year, but it does get to normal room temperature occasionally. I've never had a storage problem with wines from Dee Vine, but I admit to being more comfortable with refrigeration.

Hi Walt -

Thank you for the news. I receive the regular emails from Dee Vine Wines, but wasn't aware of the impending move yet. Anyway, I have had very good experiences with DVW in the past - great service, and no issues with their storage - and would gladly continue to buy from them if they could ship to me. Hopefully, everything will work out with their upcoming move.
