- 1998 Bert Simon Serriger Würtzberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (1/16/2011)
I can just picture the grapes for this being harvested, fermented, bottled, shipped across an ocean, and mailed from Seattle to my house in California. That this wine made it to me is a miracle of our modern commercial system. That it was foully corked is a nightmare of an outmoded closure. Luckily, I had the next wine lying in the fridge, to ease the sting. NR (flawed)

Still a touch of sulphur and a slightly reduced aroma, but this is more or less open for business. Is there a region in the world that produces wines with a greater sense of sunniness and purity? Mint, melon, and menthol swirl together with surprising intensity but (for an auslese) light body. Truly beautiful, great sugar-acid balance, is there anything else I can say? One of the best wines I've had in months. Excellent.
