WTN: Two from Alba, and an impressive Italian sparkler

The flood of backlogged notes continues . . . .

An acknowledgment is in order here: the Barbera and the Dolcetto were sent to me by a most generous WLDG member, who wishes to remain anonymous. Thank you very much, you-know-who-you-are, they were much enjoyed by myself and those I shared them with!

Stefano Farina, Barbera d'Alba 2008
Dark purple (with some ruby). Nicely fruity nose. Blackberry, juicy plum, some currant, roses/violets, forest floor, and toward the finish, an impression of dark chocolate, with a hint of pine needle-like pleasant bitterness. Medium-full bodied, with juicy acidity. Delightful. Shamefull that I, an Italophile, had not had a Piedmontese Barbera until now; and it seems I understood Barbera hardly at all. Very Good (86 - 88). [10/19/10]

Rotari, Brut, Talento, Trento NV
Pear with a hint of apple, tangerine rind, a hint of red berries, macadamia nuts and toast, with minerals. Great body and depth! This is fully the equal of some non-vintage Champagnes. Excellent (88 - 92). [10/24/10]

Giovanni Rosso, Le Quattro Vigne, Dolcetto d'Alba 2007
Dark ruby. Black cherry, blackberry, a whiff of flowers, and almonds. Vinous, and very Italian. Has the perfect kind of acidity to cut through rich pasta dishes. A solid wine. Very Good (84 - 88). [10/24/10]
