WTN: 2001 Meulenhof Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese

by David M. Bueker » Fri Jan 14, 2011 8:04 pm

Starting to really come around with a bit of mature development (though this bottle was a minor leaker). Still displays youthful fruit and ample (but not extreme) sweetness, but also a touch of petrol and an emerging bit of lemon cream. Lingering, slatey finish that (even for my still dulled senses) conveys that sense of the steep slopes of the Mosel.

Nice. I remember the leaking 01 Auslese we had some time back was absolutely stunning. Meulenhof makes some fantastic Riesling. (Have you had the 09 WS Auslese yet?)

Meulenhof´s vines are nicely placed in an area where holdings tend to be small and of diverse quality. Poor old Ernie L has 25 hectares in Wehlen divided into 168(!) parcels, the smallest containing no more than three(!) vines...

Fredrik,

I believe that fleurbereinigung is imminent in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which will consolidate holdings, but of course will also rid us of all those troublesome old vines.

Worth cracking a bottle some time. It's gorgeous, to the point that I straightaway tried to order a solid case of it (on top of the 4 you ordered for me)...
