2005 David Coffaro Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc

by Shaji M » Tue Jan 11, 2011 5:39 pm

Opened it over New Years. Pale gold in color. Mangoes, tropical flowers, lychees, amaretto and a faint pleasant acetone like nose. Viscous. More mangoes, pineapple, honey, citrus and almonds on the palate. Simply delicious. Even after several bottles that evening, this one caused all of us to pause and say "wow!"

When visiting this winery in 2000, I was most impressed with their LHSB of ? vintage. They over-blend their reds in my opinion but that dessert wine was fabulous!

Jim,
David Coffaro tends to blend almost all his wines and I have found his blends to be very good. I have bought several vintages of his wines and they age gracefully and are great values. Once when I had visited his winery, I got a chance to taste this LHSB from the barrell and I was intrigued enough to buy a couple of bottles (375 ml). Didn't regret it.

Shaji, when I visited the winery in 2000 I was so impressed with the assistant winemaker, Sean and David and their fabulous sound system and the LHSB that I later ordered a mixed case of various reds. They all tasted like good Zins in my opinion. Then I found out thru Davids diary that someone had retured to the winery a few cases of 1997 Coffaro Cabernet. Well. I thought, if you couldn't make a fine Cab. in 1997 you should try some other field. So I ordered a case of that Cab. That was the end of my association with David. That wine was quaffable but not really resembling a Cab. from anywhere in Cal. I strongly believe the very good/excellent vines at Coffaro are under-appreciated in the extreme blending process David employes. Just my 2 cents!

Jim,
Thats because every grape in Dry Creek wants to be a Zin when it grows up.. :)
Coffaro has a bad ass sound system..I agree.
