I just ordered a selection of van Volxem's '09s, which I hope will arrive in due order. That's maybe why I, while searching for a proper wine to tonight's dinner, settled for a van Volxem of the previous vintage. If you just want the short verdict, let me just tell you that I am still very happy that I ordered a case of '09s...
2008 Goldberg, van Volxem Saar, Germany 12% ABV
Surprisingly deep golden colour.
Unsurprisingly deep nose with layer after layer of ripe fruit and minerals (sorry, Sue). Peaches, chalk, slate and more than just a whiff of petroleum.
Initially in the mouth just off-dry, then with a wonderfully thick and chewable acidity that carries on all through the sensation on the palate until the almost bitter and still very chewable and mineral end. Almost sharp and lean, but with an astonishing mouthfeel and a long, thick aftertaste. Amazing wine, both just to taste and feel the different layers unfolding and, even more so, as a food wine. Needless to say, I'm really impressed. Niewo rules!
Cheers,
Anders
