MA Retail Tax Going Bye Bye

by Carl Eppig » Fri Jan 07, 2011 2:02 pm

As of February 1 the folks in MA and surrounding states (e.g. New Hampshire) won't be double taxed on alcohol sales anymore. This means that MA retailers can become more competitive. Good news!

Surrounding states? Connecticut is most of the southern border of MA, and is not eliminating their tax.

Guess I missplaced a modifier or something. Meant to say those in surrounding states won't have pay sales tax in MA anymore.

You know, after I posted I wondered if that is what you meant.

Anyway, I think the tax is gone.

Carl,

Maybe I am just plain negative thinking, but it seems to me that when a government drops one tax, they add or increase another. Am I all alone in thinking this way? An example would be states that do NOT have an income tax. It seems to me that those states have some of the highest overall property taxes in the country. Of course sales tax on wine etc, doesn't compare to property tax, but you get the idea. Yep, I am still a curmudgeon.

Bob,

MA instituted the sales tax on alcohol just a year or two ago as an add-on to their (already high) excise taxes. This was a roll back by statewide ballot question of a very recent addition.

Lovely! I could not get use to seeing the price on the bottle versus what I actually paid.....
