WTN: '09 Keuka Lake Vineyards Vignoles "Gently Dry"

2009 Keuka Lake Vineyards, Vignoles, Gently Dry, Finger Lakes, NY:

KLV was one of the more pleasant visits of my trip to the Finger Lakes this past autumn. A small producer on the west side of Keuka Lake, the specialize in small batches of hands-on Rieslings, Vignoles (some vineyard designated) and some old vine Leon Milot and Delaware.

This wine is very aromatic with a nose of lime, peaches and grass - I would guess a cool climate Sauvignon Blanc. Light color, with a bit of spritz. Extremely bright on the palate with massive acidity: Oswaldo could be satisfied that this one was not acidified. Having said that, the balance is excellent - lots of substance and a touch of RS keep it together. More lime, grapefruit and mineral on the palate, with a nice length. Bracing stuff that could pass for a fine SB. As an aside, some of the other 'dry' versions were almost severe - I think I preferred this one, at least for current drinking. $13, 12.3% abv.

Joe - I'll have to find some of this. Generally, I'm not a fan of SB, however, I did have one from the Loire a while ago that was very enjoyable, and Vignoles is probably my favorite hybrid (I have 20 vines growing in my yard).
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Howie, I think you will really like this - their website lists some retail outlets. The SB aspect was a surprise, but there is still that electric acidity that one gets with Vignoles. While dry (or dryish) versions of this grape are rare, I think it can be quite sucessful (Anthony Road also does a good one).
