WTN: 2009 Müller-Catoir Weißburgunder

by Bill Hooper » Tue Jan 04, 2011 5:27 pm

2009 Müller-Catoir Haardt Weißburgunder Kabinett Trocken -Pfalz, Germany 12,5%

This is the middle-tier of three different Pinot Blancs that M-C makes and for me, the best value. Lemon, pear, a refreshing grapiness, taut, mineral, and sweetly scented. I could drink it every day -far from neutral, it is just so much more about texture than fruit -so cold and stoney. When I am king, this will flow from the water-fountains while maidens do the safety dance. 10€

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill -

Thank you for the great note. Have not had any 2009s from Müller-Catoir yet, but this sounds very nice. Will definitely keep an eye out for it . Although I am well aware that Terry Theise is not a big Pinot Blanc aficionado, I did buy a few 2003 Müller-Catoir Rieslings last fall from a different importer (closeout special), so maybe an M-C Weißburgunder will turn up somewhere here eventually.

Thanks for the notes. The 2009 whites from Germany (down here in Baden as well ;) ) and Austria that I've had have all been spectacular. I've got a lot in my cellar waiting for the warmer weather.

I've come to realize that as phenomenal, incredible, and even as versatile as Riesling is; I'd go nuts if I couldn't drink anything else (which is why I live in the Pfalz and not the Mosel, as much as I love those wines). I've had a long appreciation for Pinot Blanc ever since I tried a 1995 Oaked-Aged California bottling in about 1998 and decided that it must get better than that. Luckily it did. It's so perfect with both fruit de mer and pomme de terre that it surprises me that it's never taken off in the US (outside of Portland, Oregon.) I wish you luck in your quest for the M-C. If you can't find one, let me know and I'll ship you a bottle in the guise of Pfälzer Olivenöl!

Cheers,
Bill

If it's Pinot Blanc you want I heartily recommend an Austrian bottling from Hiedler. His Weissburgunder Maximum is the best Pinot Blanc I have ever tasted, bar none.

Yeah, I can't blame you about waiting. It's been pretty freakin' cold around these parts. The Pfalz hasn't lived up to it's billing as the 'German Tuscany' this year. From the travelling I've done in Baden lately, it seems you're in the same boat. Truth be told, I don't change my white/red consumption much in the winter, though I don't drink much rose.

You get a bottle of Heidler Maximum, I'll get a Prieler Leithaberg Blanc and we'll meet in Iceland for shellfish.

Bill, if you like, let me know if you're around Freiburg and maybe we can open one together. I wouldn't mind an excuse to open one a little too early. :) Although the port, dry reds, Ulmer Winterbock, and more importantly, the bourbon have certainly kept me happy lately.

And by the way, Pfalz isn't the warm region of Germany. It's right here in green-town. We're supposed to have 12 degrees (C) on Friday!

Bill -

I'll let you know if I find anything over the next couple of months. In the meantime, I'll also take David's suggestion, and look for the Hiedler Maximum, which I am pretty sure I have seen locally. The couple of Hiedler Grüner Veltliners that I have had have been quite good.

Thanks for the offer, Dan. I'd love to. I'll send you a PM if I get a chance soon. Next week pruning begins, so It'll be when we finish that before I get anymore time off.
