However popular Rhone wines are in this group, wines of the Luberon are rarely mentioned. I'm guilty of rarely mentioning them myself, and that's because I rarely see them to try them. The 2006 Bastide de Rhodares (a Tardieu-Laurent property) would make one wonder why. Egg salad stinky nose is initially off-putting, but that does blow off with time and a huge nose of spicy red and black fruits emerge as well as some leather and cassis. On the palate, it's dark berries with red plum acidity and spiced cherries. It's a luxuriously big wine with excellent concentration, silky tannins and admirable length on the finish. If I didn't know what I was drinking, I'm not sure I wouldn't have thought Super Tuscan before considering the Rhone let alone a lesser appellation Rhone wine that I picked up at auction for six bucks. A real eye-opener.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
