Who is this Greg Gauthier Guy?

by Jim Grow » Mon Jan 03, 2011 1:05 pm

I recently picked up a 2008 Cal Riesling from Arroyo Seco and Gravelstone Vineyards produced by Greg Gauthier. I've never seen this label before and at 14.1% abv, this is the most alcoholic Ca. Riesling I can recall. I've been under the weather for the last 3 weeks and probably won't try it for another 3-4 weeks. The back label states that he travels thru the state looking for great vineyards to make wine from. Has he been around for a while? Does fhe have any sort of esteemed reputation?

If he has an esteemed rep, it's in a different circle than I travel. But also a search on a more Cali-centric board turns up no hits for Gauthier. Cellartracker shows a few wines (a SB, a Riesling, a PN).The PN entry seems to imply some relationship to Bouchaine, a middling (IMHO) Carneros producer.

I happen to like the Bouchaine Chardonnays. They are on several restaurant lists in Charlotte and also represented at past Charlotte Wine and Food Weekends. Gauthier has worked for various California wineries from huge operations (Sutter Home, Rodney Strong) to now the family-owned Bouchaine Winery in Napa.

Good luck with that wine, Jim; will be interesting to see what you think of it. I think you can count on it bearing any resemblance to it's European cousins, but it might be an interesting wine.
