'70 Lafite

by Paul Savage » Tue Dec 28, 2010 2:26 am

A bottle from a Brentwoodwine.com auction a few years back, and like everything I have received from them, in great shape.

I opened this 4 hours early to give it a slow-O and took a small initial taste to enlarge the surface area to silver dollar size. It was quite fresh, showing no oxidation or adverse signs of age, but was quite thin and delicate and a touch high in acidity.

4 hours later, and at quite a cool temperature, the fruit had developed a bit, but the wine was still very light and delicate, in line with Parker's notes. But it had an edgy elegance too. The color was light but completely sound. The palate had a brightness from a touch of extra acidity. As time went by, I couldn't help but think of a matron, or better, a queen, with advancing years but still with gentle vitality, wearing some exotic delicate perfume from a formula that was 300 years old! But this matron had some annoying attitude of stern aloofness that made her a bit challenging to enjoy being with! I looked for warmth, love, even a sense of humor, but all I found was this aloof, delicate, edgy elegance in a very light-bodied form. Still, I felt "privileged" to be in her presence! :D

Thanks Paul. I had the 70 Lafite only once and that was 16-17 years ago. Funny but your note below is right in line with my memory of that wine.

Wonderful, evocative tasting note, Paul. Nothing like an old Bordeaux to take on such personality, is there?

Well, older Bordeaux usually do have some good personality, but I tend to find more love and warmth with the Burgs! :D
