Christmas dinner wines

by Glenn Mackles » Sun Dec 26, 2010 12:29 pm

Pre-dinner
Henriot Millesime champagne 1996. Very golden color. Not very fizzy... a little fizz but less than usual. A strong citrus nose. Also a distinct citrus note of flavor, just a touch of yeast on the tongue. Very, very long finish. Very glad I have another bottle of this.

With dinner of glazed ham.
Sea Smoke Southing pinot noir 2006. Medium dark red. Very berry, berry both in nose and taste. Quite smooth and resolved but I think this one could benefit from another couple of years to deepen a bit but very enjoyable now.

With desert of cherry pie
Fonseca vintage port 1994 1/2 bottle. Nothing here to dissuade me that 1994 was a great year for port. Huge amounts of complex flavor, so much that it's really hard to unwind. A desert in itself. No hurry... this one will only get better and better the longer you wait.

Hope everyone had a great holiday.
Glenn

Thanks for the note on the Southing. I have this wine, and was quite disappointed in it compared to the 2005, which was one of the loveliest, most perfect young California pinots I've ever tasted. Just spectacular. The '06, by comparison, was quite green. Not bad, just ordinary, and missing all that berry you speak of. I'm now encouraged.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
