2007 Weingut Nelles Spätburgunder ‚Classic‘ Qualitätswein –Ahr, Germany 13,5%
This is a picture-perfect example of just how delicious (and) affordable Ahr Pinot Noir can be. Nelles is one of the top five or so producers in the Ahr and one of the more classically-minded within that group. I got a chance to blow through there in 2005 and again earlier this month (when the vineyards were dusted with snow), though I bought this at a nice little shop in Mannheim. blackberry, elderberry, graphite, peppermint and sweet paprika. There is an elegant texture but it is far from spoofy and the grippy tannin keeps it honest. Zero detectable sweetness, zero new oak, zero cola. Very nice and under 15€.
Cheers,
Bill
