WTN: Rieslings for the tropics

by Salil » Wed Dec 22, 2010 4:00 pm

Back in Singapore now. Great to be with family again, and no complaints about the respite from New England winter either. Opened some really nice young Rieslings to go with some great kebabs, rice, daal and various curries and the tropical heat.

2009 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Drachenstein Riesling Dragonstone
Really good as always. Full of bright apple, pear and lime fruit conveyed with a sense of real energy and freshness to the flavours. There's really bright acidity here, moderate sweetness and a bottle literally vaporizes.

2008 Frankland Estate Dry Riesling Isolation Ridge Vineyard
(A nice Western Aussie Riesling for a bit of variety - see, I don't only drink the German stuff. ;)) This has really come around with a couple of years in bottle - I remember it being very tight and slightly reductive on release, but right now it's incredibly layered and expressive, full of fresh grapefruit, lemon and pear fruit accented with kerosene and smoky notes with a vivid rocky mineral base underneath. Comes across bone dry with plenty of acidity cutting through whatever sugar there may be, with a sense of real lightness and refreshment. Great stuff.

2009 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs
Tremendous. There's incredible depth and complexity here; layers of citrus and riper white fruited flavours, florality, more exotic herbal and spicy elements and a stony minerality beneath that becomes more intense and expansive with air. This has great balance and persistence, coming across almost chiselled in texture with its acidity more prominent than I remember from a bottle a couple of months ago.

2009 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese
Starts out with a beautiful exotic scent of flowers and talc over a bed of stones that leads into a palate packed with incredible minerality and a spectrum of bright fruit ranging from fresh limes and citrus to riper tropical elements. It's very young right now with plenty of primary sweetness, but already so complex and detailed with fantastic balance, really good acidity balancing the weight and sweetness, and a finish that just keeps going. Wow!!

Rat bastard! Do hit some hawker courts for me and bring along some nice Riesling to accompany the food. In my abject jealousy, I'll console myself with the thought that you'll have to return to a New England winter from the tropics...

On a serious note, thanks for the interesting notes. I'll be stocking up on my '09 Rieslings soon.
