WTN: 2002 Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux St. Jacques

by Diane (Long Island) » Sat Dec 11, 2010 11:24 pm

Dinner was at Riverpark tonight thanks to the favorable report by Ramon Cabrera.

The food was first rate. My starter of braised octopus with cilantro was outstanding as was Joel's short rib ravioli. We each ordered the duck breast with pomegranate and that dish was heavenly with the wine. The nose on the wine was beautifully aromatic. The palate was tight with anise and red berries, the finish was a little clipped, but the overall package was lovely with a glimpse of what the future should hold.

Love the Jadot Gevrey wines. I am not surprised the Lavaux was still tight. The 2001 Estournelles is still tight as well.

I’m glad you enjoyed the restaurant, Diane. We’ll be revisiting again (soon) and this time we’ll do the more casual side of the restaurant, with the lower cost menu.

Thanks for the notes on the 2002 Jadot Lavaux which I thought I have, but then re-checked and saw that I actuually have the Clos Saint-Jacques. I suppose they’re very close enough within the commune, but your TN will get me googling to read up on the differences between Clos and Lavaux … unless somebody can expound.

According to Coates, LSJ and ESJ are south of CSJ and the main difference is that because of shading/valley effects they are cooler than CSJ. Of course CSJ is generally considered to be a league above the others.

Personally, I haven't had enough of these three wines to expound based on experience. Hopefully that will come with time!

Ramon - I wasn't aware that there was a more casual side - was it in the bar area near the entrance? Personally, I found the menu to be reasonably priced, and each dish was exceptional. The duck was one of the best preparations I've had.

I was afraid that there would be a mob scene following the mostly positive review by the Times last week, and was surprised to find that it wasn't the case. My guess is that is due to its isolated location. We had no problem finding the restaurant, but finding the parking garage was another story.

I hope you will let me know if you check out the other menu.

All I can say is I wish I had the Clos St. Jacques, but I do not. I think it was the Clos St. Denis that I had a year ago at Veritas and it was outstanding. Based on that experience, I had hopes that the Lavaux would have been more open.

Diane:
They have a Cafe/Bar that our maitre'd then pointed out to us somewhere closer to the large windows. Here's the menu: http://www.riverparknyc.com/menus_cafe.php
Based on your notes, I will leave my bottles alone at the offsite. I do have a few village level 2002s that I will try out sooner rather than later.

Thanks Rahsaan. I may be reading this wrong, but the cooler climate in the LSJ and ESJ makes me presume that CSJ is generally riper and, potentially, bigger. I also hope that someday I'll have the experience to be able to taste the difference(s).

That's what it sounds like to me. We know that historically the easier to ripen sites had advantages but Coates says there is no major difference in soil composition or exposition. And from the higher informal ranking of CSJ I'm guessing there is also more finesse (which I always thought was related to soil, gentle ripening, etc) and not just more size. Must drink more to figure it all out!!

I'll let you know when it's time to come over for the 2001 Estournelles vs. Clos shootout. Maybe we can convince Salil to scour up a bottle of Lavaux.

Of the few bottles I actually have, I have two of the 99 Estournelles. But given Jadot's style I wasn't optimistic about drinking them anytime soon! Although I am curious..

Last I checked they didn't make any Riesling or Scheurebe from Lavaux - so no, I don't have any. ;)

Put down the corkscrew and step away from the bottle!
