WTN: Bergdolt Spätburgunder

2008 Bergdolt St. Lamprecht Spätburgunder Qualitätswein Trocken -Pfalz, Germany 13,0%

Astonishingly good Pinot Noir for the price! At under 10€, I'm normally happy with simple, honest, and straight-forward wine with good fruit. Complexity is not a given. Bergdolt is a Champion Pinot Blanc specialist but they show their versatility here with the darker Burgundy as well. Tobacco, chicory, wet loam, ash, salty black licorice and I suppose too that there are some Pinoty fruit flavors in here. This is in the running for my favorite (affordable) 2008 Pfälzer Spätburgunder along with the Minges and Becker Qualitätsweine.
Cheers,
Bill

Have you by any chance tasted their 09s? As it happens I was just getting ready to order some for my German inlaws for Christmas, having heard about them, but never tasted here in the US.

Rahsaan, sorry for the late response -I have been travelling through Franken since last week sans internet technology. I have not yet tasted any of Bergdolt's 2009 Weißburgunder. I have liked what I've tried from 2007 and 2008 (except for a barrique 2007 that was just too much for me.) The wines, the Spätlesen in particular, are normally firm and viscous compared to most Pinot Blanc, though not as gritty and mineral as those from Prieler or Schiopetto (my benchmarks for the Blanc.)

Cheers,
Bill

No worries, we went for a couple bottles of the 09 Mandelberg Kirrweiler Weissburgunder GG. Which I am sure will be fine (and hopefully not barriqued to death).

They did mess up the order and sent a couple bottles of 09 Buntsandstein Riesling Kabinett Trocken instead of 09 St. Lamprecht Weissburgunder Spatlese, which was weird because they said the Buntsandstein was sold out when we first communicated. But, given the Christmas rush, it's ok. I'm sure my in-laws will drink them all! (And I look forward to tasting these wines some day).
