WTN: 4 wines I liked (Burgundy inc Beaujolais, and Mosel)

by Dale Williams » Tue Dec 07, 2010 12:37 pm

2008 Losen-Bockstanz Riesling Kabinett
Slight, fairly sweet, moderate acids. Not a star by any means, but a pleasant wine that was inexpensive ($11 I think, Grapes in White Plains, it was being shown when I did a pickup month or so back). B-

2009 Joseph Drouhin Morgon
Really delightful for $14. Floral nose with a little smoky edge, full red cherry and raspberry fruit on palate. Acids and moderate tannins provide structure, this is in the "it could age, but it's tasty now category." This could please traditional Cru Beaujolais lovers as well as those that only like 2009s. B++

2007 Sauzet Chassagne-Montrachet
with swordfish, endives braised in porcini broth, & sauteed spinach. I liked this before, I loved it this night- unsure if it's the wine, the match, or (more likely) me. Rich, fresh, white fruits and citrus, a little hint of butterscotch. Minerally, chalky, fine. A-

2009 Fanny Sabre Bourgogne Passetoutgrains
with cowpeas and broccoli. Fresh, light, and easy. Raspberries and a little cranberry, lively acidity, nice finish. Fine value at $13. B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I have never tried a Drouhin Beaujolais. Now I just might.

Is that a course or a meal!

Either way, funny to match such vegetal foods with a Passetoutgrains. You're giving in to all the stereotypes!

A meal, for meatless Monday! Cowpeas are vegetables, but not really vegetal (like blackeyed peas).

David, I used to ignore the Drouhin Beaujolais, till John G turned me on to the '06 Brouilly. Since then I've found them solid values (the Crus tend to stay $13-16), this is maybe my favorite to date.

Ok, that makes sense. I guess I just read it quickly as snowpeas.

I'm a fan of Louis Carillon, but have never heard of Francois. Any relation?

Zachys started a 25% off all in-stock items sale this AM. I picked up a few more of the Drouhin Morgon at $12.75.
As always, one must be price conscious at these sales, 25% off is not a guarantee of a deal, as sometimes their regular price is quite high.
