When I was last in the Rhone (2007) there was a lot of talk about a new [i]cepage[i] called Marcelan. It is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. The examples I had were quite good (varietal wine and a blend with Syrah). We had a shot discussion about the grape here a few years ago but have heard no more since. The vines were young and there was much hope for the future. I did hear that the grape has achieved "Vin de Pays" status in the Rhone, one step closer to being allowed into the various blends. Anybody have anything to report?
