Values at Grocery Outlet

by Jim Vandegriff » Tue Nov 30, 2010 6:38 pm

I did my occasional search of Grocery Outlet, the discount grocer and wine dealer in the west coast of the USA, in Eureka, CA today. Some wines I found were Ramsay 2007 North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon for $5.99, Blue Pirate 2007 Oregon Pinot Noir for $3.99, Pacific Rim NV Dry Riesling for $2.99, Celler de Capcanes Mas Donis Barrica 2005 Old vines Montsant for $4.99, and Santino 2005 California Zinfandel for $2.99. Each has received decent reviews via CellarTracker and if you are near a local Grocery Outlet you might find these (and many other) bargains there. (Of course I also just spent the last of my wine budget for the year on the Winex.com 2008 Oregon Pinot Noir sale. A word to the wise, St Innocent Momtazi is quite special.) A good word to the very wise, Jim.

That Momtazi is a spectacularly good bottle of Pinot!

Although some of those bargains sound pretty good too. :D

I picked up a bottle of 2006 Kunde Estate Syrah (USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley) for $4 today. I will try it tomorrow.

2006 Kunde Estate Syrah - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (4/2/2011)
There's good material here, but it doesn't come together. Good shiraz-style fruit (somewhat surprising given the Sonoma Valley appellation) isn't integrated with the acid, though the oak lends a good note. If it weren't for the agglomerate cork, you could pass this off as a more expensive wine. Good value. Good+.

The best deals that I have found so far have been Sacred Hill Sauv Blanc 2008 for $2.99 and 2005 pinot Noir for $5.99. Sacred Hill used to be imported by Diageo but they got dropped by the winery. Other New Zealand negotiant labels I have found there have been OK at best.

Wow, I didn't know they had such great values. There's an Outlet by me, I'm going to have to check it out!

Robin, do beware that most of what they have is trash: cheap wines that deserve their low price, and wines that got damaged somehow (a lot of bottles left in a hot truck that 'cooked' kind of thing) in transit and are dumped by their distributors. But there IS the occasional gem, and if you're willing to kiss a few frogs you might find them.
