Neuburger anyone?

by Gert Claes » Tue Nov 30, 2010 1:25 pm

Just finished dinner - North sea sole with potato purée, butter sauce and a bottle of Austrian Neuburger wine. Neuburger being the grape variety.
I wasd agreeably surprised, to say the least - Nice balance, good fruit, nice acidity, good structure - a bit like a very good pinot blanc, but with a more refreshing acidity

Here the wine details: Stoiber - Niederösterreich, 13% Alcohol, Neuburger 2009. Pretty solid in alcohol at 13%, but not noticeable, so very nice indeed... A nice discovery, for me at least! Only one negative to it - there's only a single bottle left...

My sample size is too small (exactly 1 several years ago) to make any quality judgements about Neuburger. It's yet another in a long list of Sylvaner crosses (this time with Roter Veltliner) that is seldom seen outside a very locaized area.

Calling Robert Dentice!

Only had a couple of examples of Neuberger (from Robert's cellar), but it's a grape I find really compelling and really should explore further.

Last month had the opportunity to drink some 1997 Franz Hirtzberger Neuburger Smaragd that was a truly incredible and attention-grabbing wine, combining some of the best flavour and textural aspects of Gruner and older Riesling.

Nikolaihof makes excellent Neuburger -though that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Cheers,

This won't be much help, but a few years ago, I had a really nice 1998 Feiler-Artinger Ruster Ausbruch Pinot Cuvée that contained Neuberger (along with Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay). It would be great to try a pure varietal Neuburger sometime, but I have had trouble finding one around here.

Hello Andrew,

Maybe the place where you found your Ruster Ausbruch could offer the single varietal Neuburger from Feiler-Artinger or their Cuvée Gustav (Chardonnay + Neuburger), both dry. Me personally, I find most of the wines from F-A very characterful, dry, late harvest or sweet. Permanently on my buy list.
