A friend called yesterday afternoon to ask if I wanted to come by their house for some wine. She mentioned that they had picked up a rather rare and expensive wine and that they planned on opening it. As it turned out, they had picked up a bottle of '98 Puffeney Vin Jaune. I didn't take notes on it but I found it to be a very interesting wine. The nose was quite potent, with tangy, nutty aromas. It was a little less intense in the mouth, reminding me of a lighter and less alcoholic version of dry sherry. Others have described flavors of spice and such but I didn't pick up any of that. Quite lean and minerally, though, along with the hazelnut and almond. It left me wondering what this wine would be like in another ten or twenty years.
I was happy to have had a chance to try this. Very interesting and tasty although I wouldn't put it high on the QPR end of things.
