WTN: Noland Brothers +1 Pinot Noir tasting (Long)

by Tom N. » Sat Nov 27, 2010 12:01 am

Thanksgiving tasting with Bob, James, and Tom Noland plus brother-in-law Jim

Complex tasting rules:
1. taste wine and rate
2. Would you buy this wine (price unknown) :? ?
3. Reveal price (winery price, not sale price)
4. QPR rank for each wine
5. Buy at the winery price?

Wine description

Wine A. Ruby wine. Oaky cherries on the nose. Rich midpalate with good fruit and tannin. A bit tight on the medium finish. James: Nose of dark fruit, extracted fruit nose (CA wine?). Acid bomb with tight fruit on the midpalate. Pretty nice finish. Bob: Medium to dark fruit and some spice on the nose. Fairly nice on the midpalate with a medium finish. Jim: Minerality on nose. Tight with sour cherry notes. All: This wine improved with time.

Wine B. Medium ruby. Earthy notes with cherries and raspberries. Deep rich red fruit, with smooth tannins and earthiness on the midpalate. Medium length fruity finish. A bit flabby. James: Most interesting nose of dark fruit, spices and moldy mushrooms. Soft and a bit flabby. Decent finish with nice sweet fruit. Bob: Dark wine with a deep and expressive nose of dark fruits and Christmas spices. Nice front to midpalate with short finish. Somewhat soft. Jim: Fruity. Fairly long finish. Silky. This wine evolved and improved the most with time.

Wine C. Light ruby. Earthy light cherries. Lighter pinot with nice acidity and light fruit on the midpalate. Medium length finish with light red fruit. James: Shy nose. A bit watered down but nice and simple. A bit flat. Bob: Light to medium red. Cherry with oak notes. Fairly chewy with with an acidic fruit palate. Basic wine. Jim: Not much nose. Flat with no fruit.

Wine D. Dark ruby. Earthy mushrooms, oak and hint of strawberries on the nose. Rich fruity earthiness on the midpalate with smooth tannins and a medium to long finish of dark fruit, mostly black cherries. James: Earthy nose with secondary medium to dark fruit notes. Extracted style with yummy fruit. Bob: Dark wine with big oak. Darker fruits with nice balance but heavy oak on the midpalate. Good cherry and raspberry fruit with medium finish. Jim: Fruity with minerals.

Wine E. Light ruby but a bit darker than C. Shy nose with some red fruit and earth. Nice acidity, good red fruit and silky tannins on the midpalate. Nice fruit on a medium to long finish. Nice balance. James: Light color. Red currant nose. Nice finish. Bob: Light to medium wine with lighter fruit like cranberries on the midpalate. A little bigger wine with good balance and medium finish. Jim: Spicy with light red fruit.

Wine ratings overall:

Wine A #1 ( $20)
Wine D #2 ($32)
Wine E #3 ($18)
Wine B #4 ($29)
Wine C #5 ($7)

Buy before knowing price? Most said yes except for C.

QPR ratings:
Wine C, #1
Wine A, #2
Wine E, #3
Wine D, #4
Wine B, #5

Buy wines at known price, most said yes except for Wine B, where 2 out of 4 said no.

Biggest change of opinion after prices were revealed was James' (aka the price whore) opinion of wine C. It went from a watered down pinot to a great value pinot that he wanted to buy.

Wines revealed:
Wine A: Fore Front, Pine Ridge, 2008, Williamette Valley James’ wine
Wine B: Siduri, 2008 Santa Lucia Highlands Jim’s wine
Wine C: Rascal, 2007 Williamette Valley, Bob’s ringer wine (did well for a $7 pinot up against good pinot competition)
Wine D; Sequana 2007 Santa Lucia Higlands, Sarmento vineyard My wine.
Wine E; Stone Wolf, 2007. Williamette Valley Bob’s wine.

Hi David,

This wine was made from Oregon fruit but by a California winery. So, it is somewhat of an unusual combination.
