WTNs: Silvaner, Trollinger

2009 Graf v. Schönborn Hallburger Schlossberg Silvaner Kabinett Trocken –Franken, Germany 13,5%

Silvaner doesn’t mess around in Franconian soil, Marl in this case. Orange, apricot, almond, lemon shortbread, sweet, dewy mineral and forceful, but balanced acidity. A powerful ’09 Kabinett.

2007 Rolf Heinrich Heilbronner Stiftsberg Trollinger QbA Trocken –Württemberg, Germany 12,5%

I am a fan of Trollinger (Vernatsch, or Schiava in Italy). It is so perfectly simple in flavor and it tastes at the same time so deliciously and anciently dated. This is red-wine of the distant past and I’m thankful that the modern world hasn’t completely swept it underneath the rug in favor of ever larger wines. Medium-light-bodied, cranberry, strawberry fruit, kind of Sangiovese meets Gamay, with rose-hips and a tart, fresh, but slightly rounder 2007 finish.

Cheers,
Bill

See what I'm saying Keith! Franconian Silvaner is so amazing that subconsciously, my mind was thinking Riesling. Those who say that Silvaner is a neutral wine haven't been drinking the right Silvaners.

Thanks for catching that!
