1997 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline
Wild stuff. Awesome aromatics, really exotic and intoxicating to smell with bacon fat, leathery funk, dark chocolate, herbal and meaty elements combining with dark fruited flavours into one incredible scent. There's a sense of restrained power on the palate; tremendous depth and complexity in a package that's perfectly balanced with a sense of freshness and vibrancy to the flavours and a savoury, meaty finish that just stays. Stunning!!
2001 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
Still incredibly young to the point that the sulfur takes an hour to blow off, but once it does it's quite stunning - fresh citrus and apple fruit combined with floral, slatey and faintly honeyed notes on a very light, elegant frame that's really precise and refreshing thanks to the spine of bright acidity beneath the fruit. Lovely balance, finesse and impressive length - this will really be stunning when it's mature. (AP 14-02 for those who keep track.)
2008 Domaine Barou St. Joseph
Just ridiculous QPR here. Fantastic aromatics; black pepper freshly ground over a base of red and dark fruits with some touches of leather and violet, very primary now but already really complex and gorgeous to sit down and smell. It's very polished in the mouth with a sense of incredibly purity to the fruit and a lightness of touch. I have to get more of this from CSW!
