WTN: Bedrock Cuvee Caritas White...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Nov 23, 2010 12:41 pm

Tried this last night:
1. BedrockWineCo Cuvee Caritas SonomaCnty WW (60% 110 yr old Semillon from MonteRossoVnyd/40% SauvBlanc from KickRanch; 50% new oak) 2009: Med.gold color; pleasant low-key light figgy/waxy/olive/Semillon/rosemary very light pencilly/oak nose; tart rather green olive/figgy/waxy/Semillon light pencilly/oak slight dusty flavor; med.long slight herbal/SauvBlanc rather waxy/figgy/green olive/Semillon light pencilly finish; an altogether pleasant white wine but just that; good balance & structure and may develop into something interesting. $28.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. This wine was a good example that old vines don't, necessarily, result in a profound wine. The wine spoke strongly of Calif Semillon, but seemed a bit shy and tighht. I suspect a couple of yrs of age for this might reveal a far more interesting wine. And it should not be served too cool. A near-room temperature, the nose showed much more aromatics and more interest. Not a profound wine now, but may evolve.

Aside from the whites and pinks we intend to have on the back porch on a summer day, the idea of refrigerator temperature defeats the aromatics and, often the flavor profiles, of most white wines. I usually serve whites at cellar temp. (55-60 degrees F) and let them warm to ambient in the glass.
The differences are, substantial.

As for the Caritas, I think cellar time will be kind to these wines. I have a few of the first vintage in the cave (and for the life of me, can't remember which year that is). On release, I thought the wine outstanding. Shortly thereafter, the oak kicked in and I could not enjoy it. Little by little I see the wood dissipating.
I have high hopes.

Best, Jim
