Wither Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2010

by michael dietrich » Sat Nov 20, 2010 12:09 pm

So this is the first real New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc I have gotten in to sell. Here in Oregon we never saw the 2009. The actual first 2010 was Cupcake which is negotiant. I had mentioned before that at $8.99 it was very true to Marlborough. I think it was as good as Nobilo or Giesen or several other $10-12 2009 SBs. This 2010 Wither Hills had that great freshness of new release Sauvignon Blanc. This vintage has very pronounced gooseberry. It is not quite as aggressive as the last couple of vintages. This will be a real crowd pleaser. I look forward to seeing who will be next with 2010. Villa Maria Private been should be here in the next couple of months but I am already seeing Cellar Select 2010 in other cities here in the US according to winesearcher.com.

Michael,

The last vtg I saw of this wine in my location was the 2006, and I went through about 3 cases of it over the 2008 summer. This is, IIRC, a largish NZ winery, but it does some outstanding work. IMO, the 2006 was far better than the same vtg of Nobilo, Geisen, and several others. Sue Courtney has told me that 2006 was a stellar vtg for the region, and the Wither Hills earned some prestigious awards. I bought the '06 on closeout at $6.99 minus 10% discount. Would that I could buy some 2010 from your store at $8.99.

I forgot to mention that it sells for $11.99 on the shelf. This will certainly be served at my house as one of the Thanksgiving day wines. If I remember correctly, their production of Sauvignon Blanc is around 100,000 cases.
