WTN: Something different

1996 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc
Bright gold in colour with some faintly oxidative aromas straight out of the bottle, but it freshens up and opens out with a little air to show rich grapefruit and melony notes combined with developed burnished, oily and waxy elements. It's very rich and round in texture, finishing long with saline impressions lingering on the back end. Though it's not a type of wine I'd want to have or drink a lot of, it's very nice for some variety from my usual drinking fare.

Your thoughts on White Bordeaux are similar to mine - nice to try it once in a while (I have exactly one bottle in the cellar), but no need to own a bunch.

So this is what you were doing/drinking instead of joining us at Il Corso!

For what it's worth, you didn't miss much wine-wise. We had a lot of bottles that should have been good but were corked/off/not showing well. It was like the table was cursed!

The only wine that impressed everyone (and by this I don't include Brad because who knows what he thinks) was the 04 Texier CdP Blanc. Of course we shouldn't have all been surprised by that, but it really was something. You probably would have liked the 98 MC Haardter Bürgergarten Spätlese, I thought it was good but slightly disjointed.

Yeah, wish I could have joined you at Il Corso - but seminars/other academic reasons kept me between UConn & New Haven all day. Shame about the off/corked bottles, though I'm sure the food/company was still great. Looking forward to reading the full details.
