WTN: Campbells The Merchant Prince Rare Muscat N/V

Campbells The Merchant Prince Rare Muscat

This is Campbell’s top end ‘Muscat’, currently retailing for around AUS120 dollars (approx $120 US - never thought you'd see that quoted, did you! ) for a 375 ml bottle! Cork sealed. 18% A/V.

Dark brown/mahogany in colour with khaki green tinges. Opened volatile and astringent but with time (24 hours, i.e. tonight) this passes to reveal a magnificent ancient assembly of decadent smells, flavours and texture - a tour de force of its type and unique for the utter brilliance it delivers in the minute quantities that can be imbibed at any one time, as it verges on the consistency of fresh motor oil. The bouquet is a cornacopia of muscatels, dates, maple syrup, creme de caramel, molasses, sweet earth, dusty old oak, Christmas cake, baking spices and old tea chest - an unbelievable array of nuance! In the mouth wine has enormous viscosity with mouth coating and teeth staining intensity, flavours that mimic what’s found in the bouquet and a gobsmacking finish of monumental length and intensity. This is fortified dessert wine at its global best. 96 points.

BTW, my site is up and running again. A friend retreived the keys to get back in off my old hard drive. I've posted quite a few TN's from the last several months since I've been off air. Link is always at the bottom of my posts.
Cheers,

David

Sounds delicious. What are your thoughts on the relative value of the top Australian wines of this type versus the more entry level versions from the same producers.

Good to see your website up and running again David. You always call it as you see it! Love your honesty and questioning mind/palate.

Sorry, I just picked up your question.

The average age of the "Classic" muscat and tokay from NE Victoria is a minimum of 5 years. The tendency is for these to be somewhat "grapey" with a perdominance of fresher, younger characters. At the other end of the scale is the very oldest blends, minimum 25 years (with some base material over a hundred years old from the oldest and best firms - Morris/Campbells/Chambers/Seppelt/All Saints) and here the complexity (as per the note above) can be mindboggling! The "Grand" is somewhere in the middle (average age around 15 years). The price differentials are now mostly exponential, with only Seppelt and Morris providing the consumer with extremely good value for money for their oldest blends.
Cheers,

David
