WTN: 2005 Carillon Puligny-Montrachet

by JC (NC) » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:48 pm

Brought to a church fundraiser and last half-glass consumed at home. Medium gold color with transparency. Slightly oxidized nose or is that just normal maturity five years after harvest? Pure flavors. At the church fundraiser there was disagreement about whether the Lioco Charles Heintz Vineyard Chardonnay was drier or less dry than this one. I would say the Puligny was bit more austere but both came across as dry whites, not buttery. Some lemon curd, some lanolin--went nicely with the Boursin with herbs cheese and with the chevre with herbs. It probably would have been a good match to the gougeres which I intended to bake but didn't have time to execute. Nice lightly creamy but clean finish. A good example of Puligny-Montrachet.

Thanks JC,

Louis Carillon is probably my favorite producer in Puligny. The Village wine is always expressive of vintage and stays true to style. The PCs are among the greatest whites in Burgundy, imo. I have only ever tasted the Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet GC from barrel, but even from that, greatness can be presumed.

Cheers,
Bill
