WTN: Niepoort 10-year Tawny Port

by JC (NC) » Mon Nov 15, 2010 2:05 pm

I had this with dessert at Farmhouse Inn, Forestville, Ca. The dessert was caramel toffee crunch gelato with double chocolate cocoa nib cookies.
In the soft lighting, the Port may have been reddish brown. More deep red than amber I would say. Nose of walnut husks and flavor of nuts and plum edging toward prune. Warming on the palate.

I am not a big port drinker but really love the Niepoort Tawny. The 1978 Colheita was one of those eye opening wines for me as to how complex and wonderful a good tawny can be. I don't believe I have had a Niepoort wine that has disappointed me.

I wish the Niepoort products were more readily accessible in Fayetteville. I went with a Sandeman Tawny Port Saturday when I couldn't find the Cockburn or Niepoort 10-year Tawny Ports at either of two local shops. (One shop had the Cockburn Ruby Porto and maybe the 20-year which was too expensive.)
