by TomHill » Mon Nov 15, 2010 9:25 am

Tried last night w/ dinner:
1. Dehlinger Syrah RRV (EB; 14.9%) 2007: Very dark/black color; very strong spicy/black cherry/blackberry/cola/Syrah slight herbal rather toasty/pencilly/oak slight alcoholic nose; rather tart fairly tannic/hard/extracted some toasty/pencilly/oak strong spicy/black cherry/blackberry/Syrah/licorice flavor; long quite tannic/extracted/hard very spicy/black cherry/blackberry/cola/Syrah some pencilly/oak finish; needs 5-10 yrs; almost Ridge-like on the palate; should be a good one w/ age. $43.50

1. I've always liked the Dehlinger Syrahs. TomDehlinger has been producing them for quite a number of yrs. I've usually characterized them as Syrah made by a Pinot-producer. This one seemed to be a much different creature. His Syrahs are usually pretty polished and svelte...like a Pinot. This one is much bigger and extracted than any of his I can recall. Pretty tight & hard on the palate now. I have little doubt that it'll age into something very/very good.
